I think my plan was to rewrite this to take a plain-text discord username as the argument instead of a mention. And be able to run the command in a direct message to the bot (avoid spam on the open channels).

Right, good point. Is this something you want to do now, or is there much to such a change? I didn't check, but it doesn't sound like it would be too difficult to change it to not use @mentions.
